7 Tendons, 3 Nerves, and an Artery in the drawing hand…

7 Tendons, 3 Nerves, and an Artery in the drawing hand… these were all cut clean by a single, quick, little punch to a ‘standing mirror’ that was simply leaning against a wall, – so quick and effortless, and apparently 90% of the damage could have been avoided if I had only stopped and gently removed my hand. It all happened so fast that it startled me to find my hand in a mirror that my reaction was to remove it as quickly as I could…

Baaaad Move…

I only meant to add some fancy punctuation at the end of a great argument, and I never meant to actually BREAK anything. Moments later we are racing across town to get to the hospital before I passed out from blood loss. -We arrived as the hot flashes were starting to leave the sparkles in my eyes. -The artery only took 1 stitch to fix, but they pronounced my right hand as ‘Spaghetti Wrist’ and made an appointment with the doctor who gently told me that I had a solid 50/50 chance of losing the median nerve (and thus- the use of my thumb)- or I could make a complete recovery… time would tell.

After 6 months of rehab and a lot of prayers from around the South, the recovery was great. All that I lost was sensitivity from the thumb to 1/2 of the middle finger, and $12,000 in doctor’s bills. I also lost momentum in my career as I had only done 4 Grateful Dead venue designs at that time, and I was only able to do 1 additional venue and the Fall Tour ’94 design before Jerry Garcia passed away. (Valuable time lost over a stupid, split second decision still haunts me ’til this day.)

What I gained was a good story, a cool scar, and a deep respect for the damage that glass can bring if caution is not used.

I occasionally wear a blister on one of my numb fingers or I have to rely on other sense to warn me if I’m touching something hot, but I am otherwise grateful for a good ending to this story! I no longer punch things like glass anymore…

~Cheers!

ALMOST messed it up GOOD...

Never punch glass--- no matter HOW innocent it may appear.
